Day in the Life: Thomas Neil ’14

6:45 a.m. — Alarm goes off. My grandpa and mom are up before 6 a.m. My hustle is weak, but I’ll get there.

7:15 a.m. — Pull out phone, listen three times to “Type of Way” and actually get up.

7:30 a.m. — Shower.

7:45 a.m. — Breakfast: eggs and grapefruit juice.

7:52 a.m. — First cup of coffee.

8:00 a.m. — Down another cup. Not satisfied with intake until I’m jittery, which usually takes three cups.

8:15 a.m. — Ride to JRC on one of the worst bikes on campus (my bike lock is superfluous).

8:30 a.m. — Grab a New York Times, but don’t waste time reading about Congress.

8:40 a.m. — Study in Kistle by the great windows. Forgot to check emails and now there are 40.

10:00 a.m. — Statistical Modeling in Noyce. The class is glorious.

11:00 a.m. — Walk to the JRC and eat in the D-Hall while reading. Call my mother on her lunch break.

12:00 p.m. — SGA Cabinet meeting in the presence of some engaged Grinnellians.

12:15 p.m. — I hear there were no major problems on campus over the weekend. Brief fist pump.

12:40 p.m. — Aaron [Levin ’14] or Sam [Offenberg ’14] wisecrack. Makes me flash a quick smile.

1:15  p.m. — Coffee in tow for Arabic with Professor Al-Seoudi. Congratulate him on his new baby (Mabrook!).

2:15 p.m. — International Political Economy with Professor Willis. We are watching a master at work.

2:45 p.m. — Willis deftly parries a potential tangent-inducing line of inquiry.

4:15 p.m. — Out of class. Check in on Cavs before their game. Will A-Bennett score a basket?

5:15 p.m. — Dinner in the D-hall and deep conversation with the one and only Lucy Marcus [’14].

7:00 p.m. — In Burling. Homework progressing. Bennett still hasn’t hit a basket.

8:00 p.m. — Go to do readings and return to find Bennett still hasn’t hit a shot in his NBA career. Homework is nearly done.

9:00 p.m. — Wrap up homework and try to take some time to work on my future and think about SGA.

10:30 p.m. — Reach no conclusion about my future or SGA. Call it a night and head back to apartment. Housemate [Lee Purvey ’14] greets me and asks where I have been the last few weeks.

10:45 p.m. — Decide to start cooking.

11:15 p.m. — Dim lights, calm my nerves and crash within a reasonable timeframe.
