Spring break often brings visions of warmer weather, road trips, or just a much needed breather after a stressful midsems week. But for many Grinnellians—international students, especially—who can’t justify the cost or the time it would take to make a trip home, spring break means frantically trying to figure out how to spend two weeks off campus once the dorms close on Saturday afternoon.
This year will be different. We applaud the administration for keeping the dorms open during spring break. While students will not have access to the dining hall or the health center and might find themselves in the middle of an extensive FM project, just having the option to stay on campus is a necessary change.
After the move to open dorms early after winter break, this is also a welcome sign that students’ travel needs will continue to play an important role in shaping administrative decisions.
