JRC showcases majors fair

Filling the main JRC hallway and trickling upstairs, the Majors Fair, held Thursday, March 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., was comprised of over twenty majors and concentrations grappling for students’ attention.

The Student Education Policy Committees’ (SEPC) students, organized by the SGA Student Curriculum Council, tabled to provide information to undeclared and declared students alike. Majors fought for students’ attention in different ways, including flashy posters, candy, chocolates and chips.

“A lot of people will be there. It’s very visible and we’ll have lots of snacks,” said SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs Liting Cong ’11.

For undeclared students, tables offered information on each department and the pros and cons of becoming that major.

“This is the right time to make your decision about what you major or concentrate in,” Cong said. “SEPCs can tell you what classes you can take, what are some of the cool opportunities associated with their majors, or what advisor you should pick based on your interests.”

For declared majors, they offered information on professors, MAPs and study abroad programs.

The combined Computer Science and Physics table drew the largest crowd of students. Displaying a bicycle wheel, interesting computer programs and electrostatic Van de Graaff Generators that raised the hair on a troll doll’s head, they demonstrated some memorable Physics and Computer Science experiences.

The idea to have a majors fair at which students can share their experiences with other students was first brought up last spring. A fair was held in the fall, but it was poorly attended so the SEPCs decided to host a second.

This week, the Career Development Office also sponsored Academic Advising Major Decision Panels.
