La Cabaña Grill, one of several Mexican dining options in Grinnell, is a welcoming neighborhood restaurant and the perfect destination for those who do not want to spend a lot of money on their brief escape from the D-hall. Located at 915 Main St, this casual dining experience offers $2.00 margaritas and entrees from $4.00.
“People love the margaritas,” said Manager Willy Almazan. “we have a lot of flavors.”
In fact, La Cabaña has 12 flavors of margaritas, all of which help draw customers to the comfortable restaurant. Almazan also recommends the fajitas, which, despite the inexpensive price tag, are tastily reminiscent of authentic Mexican cuisine. The never-ending supply of chips and salsa also makes it easy to sit and chat with friends while waiting for the extremely efficient waiters to bring the rest of the food.
While not entirely locally owned, the small two-restaurant operation works to fit into both the Grinnell and Newton communities. While students used to have to drive the 30 minutes out to Newton to get their La Cabaña fix, the Grinnell branch has been a fixture on Main St. for roughly two years now.
The décor is warm and inviting, and the elaborate booths create a cozy experience for small groups. The restaurant is also familiar with the college student lifestyle, because, as Almanzan said frankly, “we get a lot of students here.”
In order to ensure repeat business, the restaurant is quick to allow customers to split the cost for certain items on the menu and is proficient at accommodating large groups. This flexible, friendly restaurant is the perfect place to celebrate a birthday, the end of Hell Week, or just another Tuesday night.
