Grinnell College’s Board of Trustees arrived on campus yesterday, Feb. 25, for their second meeting of this academic year. In addition to meeting with different departments and voting on changes to the student handbook, the Board had a chance to engage with current students.

“I fully love events like this. I love networking with people, especially alumni from Grinnell who care about the status of Grinnell and the condition it’s in right now,” said Jarren Santos ’17.

These events can also provide students with potential career or postgraduate guidance.

“I also like talking about what they do currently. I think it’s important not only to see why they’re here but how they ended up here in the first place … how they went, for instance, from Spanish/Theatre major to environmental sustainability,” Santos said.

The Board’s newest trustee, Michael Kahn ’74, was enthusiastic about returning to campus. In the last 42 years since Kahn has graduated, he has noticed a number of changes to the student body, which he welcomes.

larger in terms of student body. It’s a much more diverse student body,” Kahn said of the differences since his time as a student. “There were very, very few international students. … Just seeing the faces of campus, the different cultures represented in the student body is awesome … It makes me so proud of this school.”

Kahn also noted a consistent aspect of the institution.

“The students are really smart. Every student I meet here is smart. They remind me of the people I went to school with, so there’s something that stays the same about Grinnell—that those of us who choose this place and end up loving it, that doesn’t change from generation to generation. You’re a Grinnellian for life, not for four years.”
