Day in the Life: Michael Porter ’17

7:00 a.m.—Wake up to alarm: “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada.

7:01 a.m.—Wonder if having Cascada as my Monday morning alarm is actually changing how I feel about her.

7:05 a.m.—Walk to bathroom to brush my teeth. Find puke in the sink of the men’s bathroom, so I move down to the gender-neutral. Someone managed to bleed all over that bathroom too. #Nor3rd

7:07 a.m.—Make it 75 yards, all the way to a clean bathroom at the end of the hall. Is having a cubby single in Norris even worth all this? I’m not sure.

8:00 a.m.—I read the last 20 pages of Soc. I managed to ignore all weekend and enjoy the quiet before the hyperactive first-years wake up.

8:30 a.m.—When I was coming out of breakfast, one of the men that works in the JRC asked me to make sure and tell the lady at the Information Desk, “Happy Birthday.” I did. Turns out, it wasn’t her birthday. She told me that that guy tells her, “Happy Birthday” every day of the year except on her real birthday.

9:00 a.m.—Go to class to learn.

11:00 a.m.—Class discussion never got out of the starting gates today.

12:00 p.m.—Craving sugar real bad after class. Avoid eye-contact with the dessert table when they have cheesecake brownies.

12:30-1:30 p.m.—Spend the hour preparing for class.

2:00 p.m.—Last class of the day. Can’t wait to see Julian Marx ’17 at basketball practice, so I can’t focus.

3:30 p.m.—Done with class. Phew.

3:35 p.m.—Take three scoops of pre-workout before practice.*

3:45 p.m.—Encouraged by the pre-workout, I perform my own pre-basketball ritual known as the “Honor G Run.” It is an all-out sprint in the basement of the Bear. I go from the Honor G sign hanging in at the end of the hallway next to the Auxiliary Gym, to the Honor G hanging 200 yards* away by the rock climbing wall. Usually no one gets hurt during the Honor G Run.

4:15 p.m.—Practice. For those of you who know the basketball coach, you will understand that practice is always entertaining.

5:45 p.m.—Hit the weight room after practice with my swollmate, James Page ’17.

6:45 p.m.—Dinner with the team.

11:00 p.m.—Finish up studying and head back to my room.

11:25 p.m.—Turn on the box fan and put it next to my head so the white noise drowns out the yelling, laughing and 2 Chainz that can be heard late into the night.
