Joint Board approved budgets for archery and guitar amplifiers and discussed the details of 10/10 this week.

Joint Board first discussed the budget for the newly-created archery club to purchase equipment. Archery club representative Emily Mesev ’15 said, “we want four recurve bows which cost about $120.00 a piece, and we also need safety equipment and arm guards.” The budgetary resolution passed with a unanimous vote.

The next item of concern was the budget for freesound that was submitted at the Sept. 26 Joint Board. According to their website, freesound is a “collaborative community of Grinnell artists. Our goal is to bring people together and create music to get excited about.” Joint Board initially considered a budget of $1693.26, which the All-Campus Events committee had recommended after striking an $800 tube amplifier from the request. Vadim Fainberg ’13, S&B Business Manager, justified the expense of adding an additional amplifier because it would allow an additional guitarist to perform, since freesound currently only owns one working amplifier. The entire requested budget, including the amplifier, passed 14-4-0 after light debate between senators, leaving the decided budget at $2572.26.

Aside from budgetary approvals, the Stifund committee reported that they had allocated funds to purchase 2000 condoms. Most of the Joint Board discussion, however, was centered around 10/10. The final agenda includes stops in Norris, Gates, Younker, Mac Field, Loose and Gardner. The progression will start at Norris at 7:30 p.m., though the kegs will not be tapped until 8 p.m.

Senators Sam Mulopulos ’14, Tefiro Serunjogi ’15, and Liza Morse ’15 introduced a resolution that would incorporate the SEC (Student Environmental Committee) into SGA. Incorporating the SEC under the umbrella of the SGA would afford the SEC room in its budget to undertake even more ambitious projects and further Grinnell’s commitment to sustainability. A vote on this resolution will take place at the next Joint Board session Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Towards the end of the meeting, the question of the SGA rollover budget came up yet again. While Joint Board has explored a variety of options about how the money should be allocated, the prevailing view seems to echo President Raynard Kington’s strategic planning.

“The conversation was about what we should do with this rollover money,” said Treasurer Raghav Malik ’13. “What a lot of people agreed we should do with this money is use it for long term projects that will benefit students in the future.”
