Get out there and show support!

Well, we’ve reached the end of Week 2, and our lives are beginning to fall into their recognizable routines. We now all know which off -campus house names suck, which classes are going to push us into some obscure corner of an academic building to eke out a humble grade and perhaps most of all, which folks we will retreat to when the rest of this place becomes lame and unexciting.

But with this in mind, several of this week’s stories take on a deeper-than-normal purpose: as a community, we need to stand and support each other. Colloquially, we know this as GC Pride, but beyond the oft-repeated phrase is the simple idea that we like each other and this community and that means that every once in a while we actually show it.

Sometimes that’s something easy like going out and attending one of the several sporting events happening this weekend. Th e Les Duke, the cross-country invitational, turns 50 this week and both men’s and women’s teams are in the hunt for their respective conference championship and beyond. There’s a volleyball tournament in Darby, a football game against conference rival (is that a fair characterization?) Monmouth, and a women’s soccer game on Springer. It is absolutely guaranteed that you personally know someone who is competing this weekend, so why not go out and show your face?

Other issues are not so light. Dani Zamora ’08, who was recently deported to Mexico after a normal circumstance turned into an inexplicably bad one, is now entering what we sincerely hope to be the most difficult phase of his life. He is separated from all of his loved ones, unable to work because he doesn’t have any of the necessary legal documents and his dignity is shattered. Our presence and resources in support of his cause can only help.

So this weekend, the S&B urges you to take some time and support those around your community. Go out and day-drink and watch sports on what may be the last really nice weekend we will have till spring. But also remember that this community exists beyond the boundaries of 10th avenue and High St., so please send some support—either money or some encouraging words—to Zamora.
