In a rerun of an editor-favorite edition of Students Speak, Henry Brannan ’21 asked Grinnellians, “What’s in Your Bag?
Quotes have been edited for length.

“We’ve got two little journals, a larger journal—from my Decolonizing the Curriculum class, thank you Caleb Elfenbein. This journal from the CRSSJ – this is from Rabbi Rob! Andrew Yang’s book, what is it called? “The War on Normal People.”
– Gracee Wallach ’20
“We got a knitting project—a scarf that I’m making for my best friend for Christmas, stitch markers that are used for not actually this project, notebook—also not used for this project, a fork that was stuck in there after I went to a friendsgiving thing and I stuck a fork in there and a knitting pattern that’s not the pattern that I’m using and I’m not planning on using it.

“Wrappers from the ghost of candies past. I always carry my chargers in my bag, I always have my laptop on me wherever I go. And then … forgotten documents. Lotion because it’s winter, and a face mask strip because … I don’t know.”
– Zama Buthelezi ’21
“There’s my phone, earbuds, a wallet I keep change in—there’s also gum inside of it, four lipglosses, lotion, oil absorbing sheets, hand sanitizer, this random army figurine that I have, a glasses cleaning cloth, a fidget toy, wet wipes and a charger for my earbud case … that’s everything!”
– Lisette Kelly ’22
“We have my lab notebook that I need for Chem 210, I have to put all my lab entries in there—very important stuff. Then we have a pencil case, I have to keep all my pens and pencils in one case because, if not, I will lose them. We also have my calculator in the pencil case. So, I need the case everyday to write things down.”
– Erica Satchell ’21
“We have a union button, of course, go union. Above that, we’ve got a very powerful bike light that’s out of batteries. To the left of that is my lockpicking set. On top of that is a little box of matches, there’s a marker. We’ve got a plastic gourd, which is a favorite of mine, been in my pocket for years. Then we got some Beats headphones, which I’m embarrassed by. To the right of that, are my fake Versace sunglasses, then there’s my inhaler.”
– Nate Williams ’20
