Letter to the Editor: Climate change can’t wait

Letter+to+the+Editor%3A+Climate+change+cant+wait

Respected climate scientists are now saying that the climate crisis is so advanced, we need to leave behind the notion that we will be able to “green” a fundamentally destructive system, one whose collapse now seems inevitable. In other words, sustainability is done. We’re past that. To survive, it’s going to have to be all-hands-on-deck working to remake society from the bottom up.

Since its emergence last year, the movement Extinction Rebellion has managed to change the narrative on climate change and push the UK to adopt binding climate targets for the first time.

I’m giving their talk at Drake Community Library at 7 p.m. this Monday, Nov. 11. It’s a sort of introduction to the fight. It’ll be split into three parts. First we’ll cover just how far the crisis has gone, and what that means for us (a lot of this isn’t in the news). Then we’ll discuss how the crisis will impact us here in Iowa, and how it is already. Then we’ll talk about how we can come together to stop it.

The talk will run about an hour and a half and will be followed by a Q & A.

This is the sign that you have been waiting for. The politicians, the NGOs, the startups, none of them are going to save us. It’s going to be us.
