Check out what Grinnellians are rocking at the gym

No two Grinnellians’ outfits are the same. But what kinds of fashion choices are students making when they go to the gym? The S&B sent writer Lily Dawson and photographer Sarah Ruiz to the Bear to scope out what goes into people’s decision to put on clothes for the gym.

What are the animals on your shirt? It was a track shirt, and our team mascot is the weasels, so I think this is from my first year. So it’s a weasel holding a javelin and going over a steeple barrier. – Cara Bresnahan ’19

Why are you wearing what you’re wearing today?
Honestly this shirt is not mine. I, like, changed houses in the middle of the year because mine froze and this was, like, his or something, and I’m out of laundry.
Your house froze?
Like our pipes froze because this kid turned [off] the heat, so then we all had to move out, so I ended up moving next door to a different High Street house.
So then you just got that shirt?
Yeah, it was his so like…
Is [the BEAR] a fashion environment?
I do not think so no. These are not the questions I expected.

Do you have a statement that you want to make with your outfit? I think it represents me as an individual and my identity to some extent and, yeah, kind of my passion for like working out and just being active. Do you wear gym clothes to the outside world? Never ever. Do you wear indications that you do go to the gym in the outside world? Not intentionally. So you’re projecting “gym” to the other people in this gym? Yes, exactly. – Jonathan Dowell ’18
