Staff ed: Celebrate Faulconer Gallery next week

We may like to bash César Pelli for his bulky Joe Rosenfield Center, but he has left a positive landmark on campus, albeit one that gets talked about a whole lot less. As the Faulconer Gallery in Bucksbaum Center for Arts prepares to celebrate its ten year anniversary next week, now is a fitting opportunity to take a step back and appreciate a praiseworthy space that tends to go unnoticed.

It’s easy to joke about being in the middle-of-nowhere, IA, but the Faulconer Gallery ensures we don’t get too comfortably cozy in a relatively cultureless bubble. The small five person staff that runs the Gallery has brought students, faculty, staff and the community-at-large together with exhibits highlighting worthy trends in contemporary, regional and international art. Outreach continues to grow, taking art out of Bucksbaum and into the street—seeing Curator of Academic and Community Outreach Tilly Woodward’s glitter-encrusted pick-up art-mobile guarantees an instant smile. Most impressively, it is a first-rate art space geared towards students’ needs. Programs like the Student Salon and Exhibition Seminar offer undergrads in our Midwestern cornfields a glimpse of how art works in the Real World.

To join the celebration, stop by the opening of Molecules that Matter next Friday, September 25. It’s interdisciplinary! You’re supporting the arts! The staff is friendly! The free food is delicious!
