Letter to the editor: 15 minute Sexual Conduct, Culture and Respect Survey worth taking

Dear fellow Grinnellians,

This week the Sexual Conduct, Culture and Respect Survey launched. The first, which took place in the spring of 2012, gave us insight into the various forms and individual experiences of sexual misconduct and how it manifests at Grinnell College. Our campus community gained a sense of people’s perceptions and identified areas that need to be changed. From this, the College was able to implement some changes in the conduct process. As we all know, there is still a lot more work to be done. I’m writing because I am asking and encouraging all of you to take the second Sexual Conduct, Culture and Respect Survey so that we can continue making progress. You can easily contribute by taking 10 to 15 minutes of your time to complete the survey. Not only will the survey provide the College with important information, it will also crack open the door for honest reflection leading to more sustainable, honest communication. After I took the survey, I found myself thinking about my own views of healthy and unhealthy relationships—what they look like, feel like, sound like—and I realized I don’t often talk about it out loud. This is a topic that can be painful and uncomfortable but taking this survey is a small step in an effort to create the best space for healing and intimacy. I stand by the fact that Grinnellians are gems. I know you’ve got voices. Make ’em heard.
