Grinnell student Anika Manzoor, 20, will survive a collision with a train that occurred just before 5 p.m. last Monday, Feb. 27, according to Vice President of Communications Jim Reische.
Manzoor and two friends hurried to cross the railroad tracks just ahead of a train near Third Avenue and Spring Street, less than a mile southwest of campus. Authorities believe she fell, the Des Moines Register reports, and was “scooped up by the ‘pilot’ on the front of the locomotive.” The pilot is designed to move snow or other obstacles out of a train’s path.
Manzoor was taken to Grinnell Regional Medical Center and driven Monday night to receive longer-term care at the University of Iowa hospital system, according to Reische. Her injuries were not life-threatening and she is expected to make a full recovery.
This is the second time in three years a Grinnell student was injured by a passing train. In April 2010, a student was injured as he travelled through campus. He faced more severe injuries, but has since fully recovered.
It is unknown when Manzoor will be able to return to Grinnell.
