Students gathered Wednesday night in the Faulkner Gallery for an open mic sponsored by the Grinnell Review. The open mic is in its fifth year, according to Gallery curator Tilly Woodward. She described the open mic as a “secretive group of artists” who come to get feedback on their work in a welcoming environment. Students, including Adriana Walsh ’15, presented their poetic and musical works and also performed works by others.
For example, Walsh performed a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Highway 29,” a song she described as starting “with a guy who works in a shoe store, and, by the end of the song, he drives off a cliff … or something like that.” Eva Dawson ‘14 performed E.E. Cumming’s Spring-themed poem “9,” which states that “Spring is not regulated, it does not get out of order.” Lea Greenberg described herself as “a little verklempt” following Walsh’s performance of “Highway 29”. The event ended with a piano cover of Radiohead’s song “Nude” by Caleb Neubauer who sarcastically informed the audience that they were welcome to leave. No one left.
