In May, students threw away 35 tons of garbage after cleaning their rooms out at the end of the year. While this number is down from the 40 tons at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, 35 tons is still too much trash to be throwing away in a single weekend. However, relief may be in sight. The city of Grinnell has recently implemented a single stream recycling program which research shows increases participation immensely. This means that we no longer have to sort our recyclables, and because of this new luxury, our goal this year should be to significantly decrease our waste both throughout the school year and at the end of the year.
With that in mind, it is important that students keep in mind that the new bin on the floor is not another trash can. The misuse of the recycling bins may lead to those privileges being revoked. That means placing your banana peel in the trash can and your plastic bottles in the recycling bin. Now that we have single stream recycling, let’s make sure we use it to make a difference.
