Noah Grage, 19, of Durant, Iowa, accused of assaulting and calling a Grinnell College student an anti-gay slur on Grinnell’s campus the night of Nov. 2, is currently out on bond, a Poweshiek County court document reveals. Grage was taken into custody and jailed by the Grinnell Police Department on Nov. 8. No warrant had been put out for his arrest.
Grage is accused of assaulting Kenya Taylor `28, a first-year Grinnell College student. He is facing a Class D felony assault charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years.
Grage’s bail bond was set at $1,000. Grage was released from custody on Nov. 9, after posting bond.
A preliminary hearing was originally set for Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m., but the hearing was waived after Grage’s court-appointed attorney made an appearance. Dennis McKelvie, of Grinnell-based McKelvie Law Office, is representing Grage in court.
The Poweshiek County attorney now has 45 days from Nov. 9 to formally file charges against Grage. If the county attorney files a charge, an arraignment will be held, where Grage will be formally read his charges and asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. If Grage were to enter a not guilty plea, a trial would be held within 90 days of the date the formal charges were filed. Grage could waive this right to a “speedy trial.
