Noah Grage, 19, of Durant, Iowa, faces a Class D felony assault charge for the alleged assault of a Grinnell College student on Grinnell’s campus the night of Nov. 2. Grage was taken into custody and jailed by the Grinnell Police Department on Nov. 8, and released on a $1,000 bond on Nov. 9. No warrant had been put out for his arrest.
Grage is accused of assaulting Kenya Taylor `28, a first-year Grinnell College student. Taylor, a gay, Black man, also alleged that Grage used an anti-gay slur against him earlier on the night of the alleged assault. Grage is facing a Class D felony assault charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and fines of up to $10,245.
A preliminary hearing was originally set for Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m., but the hearing was waived after Grage’s court-appointed attorney made an appearance. Dennis McKelvie, of Grinnell-based McKelvie Law Office, is representing Grage in court.
The Poweshiek County Attorney’s Office now has 45 days from Nov. 9 to formally file charges against Grage. If the county attorney files a charge, an arraignment will be held, where Grage will be formally read his charges and asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. If Grage were to enter a not guilty plea, a trial would be held within 90 days of the date the formal charges were filed, unless Grage waived this right to a “speedy trial.”
