Strand Theatre

Standing right at the middle of Main Street at 921, the historic Strand Theatre has been an integral part of Grinnell’s downtown since 1916, nearly one hundred years.

The Strand now has three auditoriums and shows three movies every week. Usually, each movie is shown three times a day, with additional matinee times on the weekends.

The Strand Theatre!

While SGA has been known to buy out the Strand, especially for midnight showings and Harry Potter movies, sometimes students just have to head out there on their own if they can’t bear to miss opening night.

With regular adult tickets priced at $7.00, the Strand remains quite a bit cheaper than cinemas across the country, even counting the extra three-dollar fee for a 3D film.

Grinnell students looking to save even more money can buy $5.00 vouchers at the Bookstore or the Spencer Grill that can be redeemed for any ticket at the Strand. Consider going to a movie on Tuesday night to munch on the Strand’s famous free popcorn.

So, next time you can’t wait for a film to come to Harris Cinema, walk downtown, buy some only slightly overpriced concessions and soak in the local history of the Strand.

Too often, Grinnell students forget to check out the town surrounding the College. This week, the Scarlet & Black sent reporters down Main Street to cover the restaurants and shops that comprise Grinnell’s downtown.
