Grinnell Softball winds up as season starts

Pioneers hit grand slam against University of the Ozarks in first doubleheader

The Grinnell College softball team spent their week gearing up for their second weekend of doubleheader games to kick off their season. The Pioneers ended their first 4 games with a 1-3 record, securing a 6-5 win against the University of the Ozarks.

On Saturday, Feb. 24, the team played their first game against Carroll University. Despite a 2-run hit from Alexa Okada `24 and Sofia Dicarlo `25 in the 4th and 6th inning, respectively, Grinnell ultimately was unable to pull out a win, losing 10-8.

Later that day, players secured their first win of the season against the University of the Ozarks. Samantha Chu `24 brought the team back from a 0-3 score with a grand slam in the 5th inning. This game marked pitcher Emma Trani `26’s first collegiate victory, clenching her the title of Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.

The following day, Sunday, Feb. 25, began with a game against Belhaven University. Within the first 2 innings, Belhaven racked up a 0-7 score. While the Pioneers were unable to secure a victory, a triple from Hannah Dykstra `25 and a 2-run single from Jasmine Oda `25 meant that the final score was a much closer 7-4.

In their final game of the weekend, the team lost 1-3 to Fontbonne University. Their one run came from Kambria Anson `24’s third-inning hit.

This past Sunday, Feb. 25, Grinnell softball continued their season with a doubleheader against St. Olaf College and Luther College in St. Louis, Mo.
