The Grinnellian: 3rd Annual outdoor music festival

This Saturday, student musical talent from all across campus will come together in the third annual The Grinnellian music festival. The event will take place in the central campus amphitheater from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., or in Bob’s Underground Café in case of rain.

This year’s festival features 15 acts—reduced from last year’s number to allow for longer sets and a more organized flow of performances. Starting off the day will be steel drum band Steely Pan, followed by acts including the ever-popular Disco band and Adriana (Walsh ’15) and Friends.

Organizer and KDIC Station Manager Daniel Kisslinger ’14 believes that this festival offers a unique opportunity to students as performers, and a fun, energetic outdoor event for the audience.

“The thing that really separates The Grinnellian is that it’s not just a passive, lying around thing. It’s an active performance by Grinnell students. For some students, these are their first opportunities to be part of an event with a formal schedule and set expectations,” Kisslinger said.

He appreciates the positive, supportive community feel that this performance fosters.

“The past two years, people who played before ended up hanging around and people would come to listen before their set, so you would get this great mix in the audience. It all kind of melds between musicians and the audience, and everyone is sharing the spotlight in a really collaborative way,” Kisslinger said. “There’s no competition that’s part of this. It’s not a showcase, it’s a celebration of the wonderful ability we have as a campus community to make amazing music.”

As in the past two years, the entire performance will be live-streamed on the KDIC website, For those that attend in the flesh, there will be grilled food and the last chance to purchase KDIC merchandise this year.
