What has it been like working with a freshman quarterback this year?

It’s been exciting to get to know Sam (Poulos) this year.  Receivers and quarterbacks have got to have a close relationship on the field so that he knows where I’m going to be on the field at all times no matter the route I’m running or the coverage we’re seeing.  We’re fortunate to have a football smart kid at quarterback who’s willing to work his butt off.

What did you do this summer?

I interned at a company called D1 Sports Training & Therapy in Franklin, Tennessee (a suburb of Nashville).  It was exciting to get experience in the workplace in a field I’m passionate about (fitness and character growth).  The company has an aggressive business model and is growing at an incredible rate.

Who has been your favorite professor at Grinnell? Why?

Professor Chan has been my favorite instructor at Grinnell. I took Macroeconomic Theory with her and now I’m in her Monetary Policy Seminar.  I really enjoyed the material, but I think what makes being in her class a great experience for me is the combination of expectations and willingness to sit down with you if you have questions.  Her classes are fast paced and intense, but meeting with her during office hours really put me over the edge in class performance.

Who is your favorite musical artist?

I like so many different genres of music as well as artists, so I’ll have to go with my most recent favorite: Pat Alger. I got to watch him perform at the Bluebird Cafe this summer with 2 other famous songwriters, and to hear all the country hits he actually wrote for the “stars” was a lot of fun.  A lot of people know his work because he wrote or co-wrote many of Garth Brooks’ hits.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself with a family, walking with Jesus each and every day.

What’s your favorite thing about Grinnell?

The people. There aren’t very many places in the world you can connect with so many different socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, cultural backgrounds in such an enclosed area (the Grinnell College bubble).

Would you rather be able to fly or time travel?

I don’t like extreme heights. And I don’t care much for old Cody.

Which of your teammates is most likely to become President?

Daniel Ryerson, our second year nose tackle. ‘Cuz he’s the craziest, dirtiest, biggest boy you will find for miles. I think that about qualifies him for the position.  Either that or Sam Poulos, because he’s just so little and cute you could fit him in your back pocket.
