The Grinnell men and women’s soccer team competed against Lake Forest College on Sept. 28 at Springer Field.
The men’s team started on the field first, with the Foresters managing to score two goals in the first half with 11 minutes to spare. In the last minute of the first half, Dylan Maddux `25 succeeded in scoring with an assist by Demi Oni `27, bringing the score to 2-1 heading into halftime.
With the first half ending 1-2, Pioneers huddled to discuss the game before breaking off into a chant.
Grinnell played hard once they came back onto the field until Jaxon Willoughby `26 tied the game with an assist by Ryan Huang `26, leaving 37 minutes in the game. This shot was Willoughby’s first goal of the season.
Zak Serby `25 shot an unassisted goal, accomplishing his first goal of the season, giving the Pioneers a lead for the rest of the game. The Foresters wound up shooting a goal with 55 seconds left on the clock, leaving the game tied with a score of 3-3.
The women’s soccer team started strong as they faced the Foresters during the first half of their game. They successfully warded off the opposing team, ending the first half 0-0.
The Foresters scored during the first three minutes of the second half, shooting another one into the goal ten minutes later. They were able to score two more goals, giving them a victory over the Pioneers, leaving the score 0-4.
Reese Komsthoeft `25, an athlete on women’s soccer, said, “We’ve been doing a lot of momentum building in practice and trying to get back on our feet after that.” She also said that after losing the match against Lake Forest, the Pioneers may have a hard time winning their conference, but the goal is to get top four.
Since their last game, women’s soccer recently won their conference game against Knox College 2-0 on Oct. 2.
