Approximately 50 Grinnell College students scattered across the Main Hall quad dining room floor on Saturday, Nov. 11, in a demonstration representing the lives lost since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war.
The hour-long ‘die-in’ came in the middle of a banquet dinner featuring roughly 100 College alumni, administrators, faculty, staff and students in attendance. The event was the capstone of the College’s Multicultural Alumni Reunion programming that took place this weekend.
Grinnell College President Anne Harris gave remarks, honoring Minna Mahlab, Dr. Kesho Scott and Dianne Jones `74, but did not address the demonstrator’s demands at the event.
Demonstrators surrounded the banquet tables at the center of the room and held up signs, as attendees looked on.

Perhaps if there was stronger leadership at the College, not a President who makes weak statements condemning the “Israel-Gaza War” (are you kidding me?) instead of governing without condemning hate speech as other like colleges did; then these poor students would have the ability to know what they are arguing and do so with intellect and compassion and not misguided anger and irresponsible research. Grinnell is taking a national beating how how this is being handled on campus. “Die ins” don’t make differences, educated discourse does. It all comes from the top.
