A man robbed the Community 1st Credit Union in Grinnell Monday, leaving with an undisclosed amount of money but injuring no one.
Grinnell police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.
Police said a man entered the credit union around 8:30 a.m. and demanded money before leaving the area on foot. The credit union is located at 205 West Street, which is next to the restaurant Casa Margaritas.
Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspect, who was caught on the credit union’s surveillance cameras. He is identified as a white male with short dark hair, a slim build and facial hair.
Grinnell Police Chief Dennis Reilly would not disclose whether the man had a gun, but said, “At no time were we in any fear for the public safety.”
Reilly said there have been no other recent robberies in Grinnell and none in the surrounding area of which he is aware.
Asked if he was surprised that a bank robbery happened in Grinnell, Reilly noted that he has only been on the job since the beginning of June.
“They certainly have had a number in the past,” he said. “In today’s day and age, you can’t be surprised by anything.”
Reilly said the man was not seen getting in a car on the credit union’s property, but could have walked to one farther away. Reilly said police are not ruling out the possibility that the man is from the area, but he could be from outside the area as well.
The credit union was open for business Tuesday, but employees declined comment.
