Winter’s settling in, but plenty is happening around town to make braving the cold worthwhile.
Here are a few events sure to spark some holiday cheer.
December 11: Merry Mixer
Channing’s Customs & Co. will host its Merry Mixer from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will feature pop-up vendors such as FLOUR at the Farmhouse with sourdough goods, KP Bliss Designs with earrings and HER Creations Jewelry’s charm bar. The shop will also offer its largest discounts of the year.
December 12: Grinnell Children’s Choir Winter Concert
Grinnell Children’s Choir is a program of the Grinnell School of Music. They will perform a winter concert at Grinnell United Church of Christ. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. The concert is open to the public and free to attend. Donations to support the Choir’s operations are welcome and will be collected at the door. Guests may enter at the front door, located on 4th Avenue, or via the accessible entrance on Broad Street.
December 13: Gift Wrapping Party at Drake Community Library
A party for the adults, the event is happening between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. If you haven’t wrapped your gifts, bring them in and use the supplies provided. If you already feel the festivity in you and have extra gift wrapping supplies, the library will take donations between Dec. 5 and 12.
December 13: Visit with Santa at Hy-Vee
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hy-Vee Grinnell, Santa will be available for photos. The event is hosted by Hy-Vee Kids Club.
December 13: Santa’s Kitchen at the Grinnell Historical Museum
Hosted at 703 1st Ave from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Grinnell Historical Museum will be bringing Santa, giving out tours of the museum, making holiday crafts and giving out cookies and cocoa. With a donation to Mid-Iowa Community Action’s food pantry, entry will be free.
December 14: Christmas Caroling and Soup Supper
The United Methodist Church, located at 916 5th Ave, will host a special supper for the holidays. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. and supper will begin at 6 p.m.
December 14: Live Nativity
The Grinnell Friends Church, located at 1115 West St S., will be hosted from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Christmas story will be presented in three scenes — the shepherds on the hillside, the stable and the wise men on their journey. Each scene is complete with period costumes and a handful of live animals. The presentation is designed as a drive-through exhibit, but families are welcome to park in the west lot of the church and walk back through to get a closer look.
December 15: Grinnell High School Winter Concert
GHS will have its Winter Concert in the Grinnell High School Auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free for the public, but donations are welcome at the door.
December 18: Santa & Mrs. Claus at the Strand
Attendees can visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at the local movie theatre in downtown Grinnell from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
December 18: Middle School Carolers and Jazz Band
At the Grinnell High School Auditorium from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the middle school choir and jazz band will perform.
