This Satuday, Dec. 5, Drake Community Library will host a Come In and Color event for adults 18 years and older. Designed to help relieve stress, the event will feature coloring books and sheets provided for free by the library.

“I think it will be a great time of social interaction besides just stress relief with the coloring,” said Sharon Johnson, the organizer of the event and a library assistant at Drake.

Found to relieve stress and anxiety, coloring is a great way to take some time out and focus on something outside of everyday life. Drake currently has two coloring books available for checkout at any time,  “The Secret Garden” and “Enchanted Forest,” both by Johanna Basford. Colored pencils are also available for checkout and when the books are completely filled out they will be put on display.

People from multiple demographics are expected to attend.

“Really, we’ll be surprised to see who all comes,” Johnson said. “We’ve had interest from moms who just want to take a break and come in and color for an hour.”

The event will provide snacks and background music as the coloring takes place. The library sees this event as an opportunity for participants to create something while also acting on self-care.

According to the press release sent by Drake about the event, “Some doctors are making the case that coloring can actually help to relieve stress and anxiety in adults.”

For college students, this could be a great opportunity to get outside of the College campus and interact with community members. Drake Community Library strongly encourages college students feeling overwhelmed by approaching finals to join in the event and take advantage of a great resource.

“College students are more than welcome. I know it’s the Saturday before finals week and we would love to have [students] come. You’re as much a part of the community as anybody else is,” Johnson said.

Altogether, the event should be a laid-back, relaxing hour filled with food, music and coloring.

“This is a way for people to get together and have some kind of social interaction. I think the library is a good place to do that because it just brings people of all kind of backgrounds together in one place, it’s a community gathering spot and I hope that’s what this is,” Johnson said.

The Come In and Color event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to register by calling Drake at 641-236-2661.

Sharon and I will leave coloring sheets and colored pencils on a table in the library so college students and others can come in and color anytime the library is open.
